Researchers say they want to conduct the first census of the American white pelican population in North America in about 25 years.

The Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating the deaths of thousands of young white pelicans at the Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge in central North Dakota, a year after thousands of adult birds abruptly left the refuge.

From an airplane a half-mile above white pelican nesting grounds here, the giant birds are hard to miss. Measuring 6 feet from bill to tail and weighing up to 20 pounds each, the birds look like moving patches of snow on the islands of Chase Lake.
