Scientists analyzed the composition of eight oil-soaked sand patties that were collected along the Gulf shores from April until November in 2011 after the Deepwater Horizon explosion. They determined and classified the chemical composition of these oil residues, showing that they contain harmful compounds.
Superlenses earned their superlative by being able to capture the "evanescent" light waves that blossom close to an illuminated surface and never travel far enough to be "seen" by a conventional lens.
PM or particulate matter is a type of contaminant in the atmosphere, considered very harmful for health, ecosystems, climate change, conservation of materials and visibility.
Researchers of the University of Granada have conducted the most complete worldwide analysis of the chemical composition and evolutionary state of a spectral type R carbon star.
Abandon any notion that the duck-billed platypus is a soft and cuddly creature -- maybe like Perry the Platypus in the Phineas and Ferb cartoon.
The scalding-hot sea that supposedly covered the early Earth may in fact never have existed, according to a new study by Stanford University researchers who analyzed isotope ratios in 3.4 billion-year-old ocean floor rocks.
By squeezing a typical metal alloy at pressures hundreds of thousands of times greater than normal atmospheric pressure, scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have created a material that does not expand when heated, as does nearly every normal metal, and acts like a metal with an entirely different chemical composition.
By Soliman, Mohamed Palkowski, Heinz Two Mo-Nb microalloyed transformation-induced-plasticity (TRIP) steels, with Al contents of 0.23 and 0.65, were subjected to several hot-rolling conditions designed to generate different ferrite morphologies and grain sizes.
Using ESO's Very Large Telescope, an international team of astronomers has shown how to use the chemical composition of stars in clusters to shed light on the formation of our Milky Way. This discovery is a fundamental test for the development of a new chemical tagging technique uncovering the birth and growth of our Galactic cradle.

Amphibole defines an important group of dark-colored rock-forming inosilicate minerals composed of double chain SiO4 tetrahedra linked at the vertices and generally containing ions of iron and/ or magnesium in their structures. In chemical composition and general characteristics they are very similar to the pyroxenes and, like them, fall into three series according to their system of crystallization. The chief difference between amphiboles and pyroxenes is in cleavage: amphiboles form oblique...
Chalcopyrite is a copper iron sulfide mineral that crystallizes in the tetragonal system. It has chemical composition CuFeS2. It has a brassy to golden yellow color and hardness of 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale. Due to its color it is often confused with pyrite though this mineral has a cubic and not a tetragonal crystal system and chalcopyrite is more often massive and less brittle. Chalcopyrite is also a darker yellow in color. Chalcopyrite is one of the most important copper ores....
