Strike Postpones Kourou Satellite Launch
2011-09-21 07:51:37

A strike at the Kourou space center in French Guiana has forced the launch of an Ariane-5 rocket with two communication satellites aboard to be postponed until further notice, the National Center for Space Studies (CNES) said on Wednesday. The launch would have marked the 60th mission of Ariane 5. It was to carry the satellites Arabsat-5C and SES-2 into orbit, but the strike, initiated by Telezpazio, a business at the base specializing in radars, forced authorities to scrap the...

Space agency officials report that the International Space Station (ISS) had a close call on Tuesday with a piece of space debris. According to Reuters, NASA said the object rushed towards the ISS, missing the orbiting lab by just 820 feet.  The agency said the crew moved to shelter inside two Soyuz spacecraft 18 minutes before it was expected to pass. NASA spokeswoman Stephanie Schierholz said the size of the space junk remains "undetermined" and no harm was done by its...

All space missions have one inescapable dependency: the electricity flowing through their systems to keep them alive. Take away its power and a spacecraft is nothing more than space debris "“ an eventuality the space power professionals strive to avoid. Next week sees more than 250 experts come together at an ESA-organized conference on power systems. The Ninth European Space Power Conference (ESPC) will take place on 6"“10 June in Saint Raphaël on...

Recognizing the value of using Earth observation satellite data to support development activities, ESA and the World Bank will work together on several projects through the 'eoworld' joint initiative. ESA and the World Bank first started collaborating two years ago when ESA carried out small-scale pilot projects that demonstrated the potential of Earth observation for the Bank's operations. Based on the pilots' promising outcomes, Earth observation information will now be scaled up and...

When ATV Johannes Kepler is lofted into space on 15 February, an ESA tracking station on Portugal's Santa Maria island will watch closely, gathering crucial data as Ariane 5 streaks overhead. In 2008, the Santa Maria station, located five kilometers from the town of Vila do Porto on the Portuguese island of Santa Maria, in the Azores, became the latest station to join ESA's global ESTRACK tracking network. Santa Maria's 5.5 m-diameter antenna provides crucial tracking services for Ariane 5...

ATV-2 is almost ready for launch on 15 February from Europe's Spaceport. It will be the heaviest load ever lofted into space by the Ariane 5 rocket, making the 200th flight of the European launcher even more spectacular. ESA's latest Automated Transfer Vehicle space ferry, named after the German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler, is now fully fuelled, its oxygen tanks are filled and most of the cargo from ESA and NASA is placed inside. Only last-minute cargo of up to 400 kg will be...
