Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored twice in the second half Sunday, pulling the Columbus Crew into a 2-2 Major League Soccer draw with the Chicago Fire. Schelotto put the ball just inside the right post early in the half and scored on a penalty kick in the 78th minute. Peter Lowry scored in the 6th and 35th minutes for the Fire. The result left Columbus (11-4-10) with a three-point lead over second-place Chicago (10-6-10) in the Eastern Conference.
Eddie Gaven's penalty kick in the 91st minute Sunday gave the Columbus Crew a 2-1 win over the Houston Dynamo in Major League Soccer. The penalty was called during stoppage time in the match between conference leaders. Frankie Hejduk scored the Crew's other goal in the first half. Cam Weaver got the Houston goal in the second half. Columbus (11-4-9) holds a three-point lead over second-place Chicago in the Eastern Conference. Houston (11-7-7) leads the Western Conference.
Dane Richards scored for the New York Red Bulls in a 1-0 Major League Soccer victory Sunday over the Columbus Crew. Richards fired a shot past Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum, the ball entering the net just inside the left post. The Red Bulls (4-16-4) next take on Kansas City Sept. 12. Columbus (10-4-9) will go against Houston Sept. 13.
Chad Marshall scored near the end of the first half, and the Columbus Crew went on to beat Red Bull New York 1-0 Saturday. Columbus Crew forward Guillermo Barros Schelotto was named Monday the Major League Soccer's Player of the Week. Schelotto scored two goals in the Crew's 2-1 come-from-behind win over Chivas USA Sunday to extend his team's unbeaten streak to nine games. The goals raised the Argentine veteran's league leading total to 10 this season. The award is the seventh-career MLS Player of the Week for Schelotto.
