The six men in the Mars500 facility near Moscow have been in isolation now 365 days. The European crewmembers have been writing in their latest letters home about the highlights, monotonous life, team spirit and determination to go on. "Wow, it's already been a year," begins Diego Urbina, one of the two Mars500 crewmembers from ESA, in his latest diary entry."One way to visualize it is if you think of what you were doing exactly one year ago, and then picture yourself living in a...

By Diego Urbina, Mars500 Crew Now that the Mars500 crew has been united, when the Marswalkers, 'returned' from the surface of the Red Planet to join the 'orbital' trio, Diego has again had time to send his thoughts. This diary was written on 21 February, before the last egress to the simulated martian surface. The last few weeks have been truly exciting. Astronauts participating in a simulated space mission to Mars made a second walk on the imitation surface of the Red Planet in Russia on Friday. The AFP news agency reports that Russian cosmonaut Alexander Smoleyevsky, who made the first maneuver with Italian astronaut Diego Urbina on Monday, was joined by China's Wang Yue for the second of the three planned sorties. The simulated mission carried six volunteers who spent eight months in a space capsule cut off from the rest of the...

On Saturday a group of volunteers will reach a stage in their one-and-a-half year experiment to study the effects of a mission to Mars when they "land" on the Red Planet's surface. Three of the six volunteers will "touch down" on Saturday before moving out of their lander for a first "space walk" Monday on the Martian surface. The landing marks the approximate halfway point for the experiment in which participants spend 520 days in isolation from the world to test how humans would respond...

On Monday, four Europeans that hope to become guinea pigs for a 500-day simulated mission to Mars said they were proud to put their young lives on hold for the sake of scientific advancement. "I want to help humanity take a step forward by improving our level of knowledge," 28-year-old Belgian Jerome Clevers said at the European Space Agency's (ESA) offices in Noordwijk in the western Netherlands of his quest to be part of the isolation study. Diego Urbina, a 26-year-old Italian, added ...
