Biologists at the University of Florida have found a reason why men's ring fingers are generally longer than their index fingers – and why the reverse usually holds true for women. The finding could help medical professionals understand the origin of behavior and disease, which may be useful for customizing treatments or assessing risks in context with specific medical conditions. Writing this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, developmental...

Women find men whose ring fingers are longer than their index fingers more attractive, according to findings in a study published by the British Royal Society's journal Biological Sciences. Previous studies which were conducted under the banner of evolutionary psychology, suggests that the drivers of human behavior are found in "nature" rather than "nurture," reports AFP. A new study from Utrecht and Cambridge Universities has for the first time found that an administration of testosterone under the tongue in volunteers negatively affects a person's ability to 'mind read', an indication of empathy. The findings are published this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In addition, the effects of testosterone administration are predicted by a fetal marker of prenatal testosterone, the 2D:4D ratio. The study has important...

Men who have an index finger that is longer than their ring finger have a lower risk of developing prostate cancer, according to a new study published in the British Journal of Cancer. Researchers studied the ratio between the 2nd and 4th finger on the right hand of 1,524 prostate-cancer patients and 3,044 healthy people over a 15-year period. They found that men with longer index fingers were 33 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer, and men under 60 had an 87 percent lower risk....

Researchers have identified a group of traders consistently able to outperform the market, even during the credit crisis. The study by John Coates and Lionel Page of the University of Cambridge offers a rare glimpse into how biology, experience and compensation schemes work together to make a profitable and "“ crucially "“ a prudent risk taker. The study, published in the open-access journal PLoS ONE, builds on previous research by Coates and colleagues that found higher levels of...

The hormones, called androgens, are important in the development of masculine characteristics such as aggression and strength. It is also thought that prenatal androgens affect finger length during development in the womb. High levels of androgens, such as testosterone, increase the length of the fourth finger in comparison to the second finger. Scientists used finger ratios as an indicator of the levels of exposure to the hormone and compared this data with social behavior in primate...
