Astronomers Discover The "Mega-Earth"
2014-06-02 03:30:17

Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Astronomers announced on Monday that they have discovered a new type of planet - a rocky world weighing 17 times as much as Earth. Theorists believed such a world couldn't form because anything so hefty would grab hydrogen gas as it grew and become a Jupiter-like gas giant. This planet, though, is all solids and much bigger than previously discovered "super-Earths," making it a "mega-Earth." "We were very surprised when we realized what we had...

Kepler Space Telescope Completes Prime Mission
2012-11-15 05:18:01

Lee Rannals for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online As the Kepler Space Telescope's prime mission comes to an end after three-and-a-half years, its new extended mission will begin. NASA's Kepler telescope has helped scientists identify more than 2,300 planet candidates, and confirm more than 100 plants. The telescope is helping to unravel more information about the universe, and gather details about what lies beyond those stars in the sky. Hundreds of Earth-size planet candidates...

NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope Discovers Two Planets Orbiting Binary Star System
2012-08-29 08:58:00

Lawrence LeBlond for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online Astronomers working with NASA´s Kepler mission have found the first evidence of multiple planets orbiting a binary star system. The discovery shows that planetary systems can form and survive in chaotic environments around a binary star system. Furthermore, the discovery suggests that earth-like planets can also exist in the habitable zone of their stars. The discovery was announced this week at the XXVIII General Assembly of...

Astronomers said on Thursday that they have discovered the darkest known exoplanet they say is the size of Jupiter. The researchers said exoplanet, TrES-2b, is blacker than coal or any planet or moon in our solar system. "TrES-2b is considerably less reflective than black acrylic paint, so it's truly an alien world," astronomer David Kipping of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), lead author on the paper reporting the research, said in a statement. TrES-2b lacks reflective...

NASA's Kepler mission has taken its first images of the star-rich sky where it will soon begin hunting for planets like Earth. The new "first light" images show the mission's target patch of sky, a vast starry field in the Cygnus-Lyra region of our Milky Way galaxy. One image shows millions of stars in Kepler's full field of view, while two others zoom in on portions of the larger region. The images can be seen online at: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/kepler/multimedia/20090416.html...

FORT DAVIS, Texas - Peruvian astronomers Jorge Melendez of The Australian National University and Ivan Ramirez of The University of Texas at Austin have discovered the best "solar twin" to date, using the 2.7-meter Harlan J. Smith Telescope at McDonald Observatory. Their findings suggest that the Sun's chemical composition is not unique, as some previously thought. The star, HIP 56948, is more like the Sun than any yet seen, and is 200 light-years away in the constellation Draco, the...

The NGC 5866, located in the Draco constellation, is named after the galaxy with the highest magnitude however some catalogs list NGC 5907 as the brightest member. The M51 Group and the M101 Group are NGC 5866 closest neighbor. The distances between these groups are similar which suggest the three groups are part of a single large, loose, elongated group. However, most identification methods consider them separate.

The M101 Group, one of many in the Virgo Supercluster, is located in Ursa Major and named after the brightest galaxy in the group, the Pinwheel Galaxy (M101). The group is composed mostly of members that are companions of the Pinwheel Galaxy. The M51 Group and the NGC 5866 Group are M101's closest neighbor. The distances between these groups are similar which suggest the three groups are part of a single large, loose, elongated group. However, most identification methods consider them...
