Lee Rannals for RedOrbit.com New photos taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show unique lava flows on Mars that resemble patterns seen on Earth. The lava flows reveal coiling spiral patterns that resemble snail or nautilus shells, according to research published in the scientific journal Science on Friday. On Earth, lava coils can be found on the Big Island of Hawaii, mainly on the surface of ropey pahoehoe lava...

The Red Planet Experiences 'Marsquakes'

University of London researchers report they have found evidence that Mars experiences "marsquakes" in the same way Earth does with an earthquake. The researchers said the existence of marsquakes is an indication that conditions on Mars could include liquid water. The team from the University of London used High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) imagery to examine a fault system known as Cerberus Fossae. The High Resolution Stereo Camera on ESA's Mars Express orbiter has obtained images of Hephaestus Fossae, a region on Mars dotted with craters and channel systems. Hephaestus Fossae lies at about 21° North and 126° East on the Red Planet. Named after the Greek god of fire, it extends for more than 600 km on the western flank of Elysium Mons in the Utopia Planitia region. Obtained on 28 December 2007, the images have a ground resolution of about 16 m/pixel. They show that the region...
