[ Watch the Video ] While NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity was traveling from Victoria crater to Endeavour crater, between September 2008 and August 2011, the rover team took an end-of-drive image on each Martian day that included a drive. A new video compiles these 309 images, providing an historic record of the three-year trek that totaled about 13 miles (21 kilometers) across a Martian plain pocked with smaller craters. The video shows the rim of Endeavour becoming visible...

Mars rover poised on rock that may yield yet more evidence of a wet Mars Shortly after Labor Day 2011, the Mars rover Opportunity was poised on the rim of the 22,000 meter-wide Endeavour Crater, preparing to sample a novel rock type. Much older than the sedimentary samples the rover´s “tasted” so far, this new sample is flush with the promise of revealing clues to the planet´s environment when running rivers coursed the surface. What was supposed to have...

NASA will host a media teleconference on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 12:30 p.m. PDT to discuss progress of NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. Opportunity reached the Martian Endeavour crater earlier this month after years of driving. The teleconference participants are: -- Dave Lavery, program executive, Mars Exploration Rovers, NASA Headquarters, Washington -- Steve Squyres, principal investigator, Mars Exploration Rovers, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. -- Ray Arvidson,...

NASA said on Wednesday that its Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has reached the planet's Endeavour Crater after a three year journey. The rover relayed its arrival at a location named Spirit Point on the crater's rim. NASA selected "Spirit Point" as an informal name for the site to commemorate Opportunity's rover twin, Spirit, which ended communication and finished its mission earlier this year. Opportunity has driven roughly 13 miles since climbing out of the Victoria crater. "NASA is...

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity is poised to reach the rim of a large crater, beginning a new phase of research for the rover. Opportunity drove out of Victoria crater in August 2008, and now only 2 miles stand in its way of driving out of Endeavour crater. NASA selected "Spirit Point" as an informal name for the site on the rim where Opportunity will arrive at the Endeavour crater. The choice commemorates Opportunity's rover twin, Spirit, which ended communication and finished...

When NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity reaches the rim of a large crater it is approaching, its arrival will come with an inspiring reminder. This crater, Endeavour, became the rover's long-term destination nearly three years ago. Opportunity has driven about 11 miles (18 kilometers) since climbing out of Victoria crater in August 2008, with Endeavour crater beckoning to the southeast. The rover has about 2 miles (about 3 kilometers) to go before reaching the rim of Endeavour. Rover...

Mars rover team members have begun informally naming features around the rim of Endeavour Crater, as they develop plans to investigate that destination when NASA's Opportunity rover arrives there after many more months of driving. A new, super-resolution view of a portion of Endeavour's rim reveals details that were not discernible in earlier images from the rover. Several high points along the rim can be correlated with points discernible from orbit. Super-resolution is an imaging technique...
