Donna McKinney, Naval Research Laboratory Dr. John Carr, a scientist at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), is part of an international team that has discovered what they believe is evidence of a planet forming around a star about 335 light years from Earth. This research is published in the August 20th issue of The Astrophysical Journal. Carr and the other research team members set out to study the protoplanetary disk around a star known as HD 100546, and as sometimes happens in...

Spitzer Detects Signs Of Ice Bodies In Alien Solar System

NASA said on Wednesday that its Spitzer Space Telescope has detected signs of icy bodies raining down in an alien solar system. The telescope spotted a band of dust around a nearby bright star in the northern sky called Eta Corvi that matches the contents of an obliterated giant comet. The space agency said the dust is located close enough to Eta Corvi that Earth-like worlds could exist, which suggest a collision took place between a planet and one or more comets. The Eta Corvi...

Using four of the world's largest telescopes, scientists have obtained the most detailed information yet from the regions around two young stars tens of light years away, finding compact discs of rocky and dusty material at distances comparable to that from the Earth to the Sun. Keele University astronomer Dr Rachel Smith will present the team's results on Wednesday April 14th at the RAS National Astronomy Meeting (NAM 2010) in Glasgow. The astronomers used data from the MIDI interferometer,...
