VLT Image Reveals Omega Nebula's Smoky Pink Core
2012-01-04 10:40:49

[ Watch the Video ] A new image of the Omega Nebula, captured by ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), is one of the sharpest of this object ever taken from the ground. It shows the dusty, rose-colored central parts of this famous stellar nursery and reveals extraordinary detail in the cosmic landscape of gas clouds, dust and newborn stars. The colorful gas and dark dust in the Omega Nebula serve as the raw materials for creating the next generation of stars. In this particular section of...

Image 1 - E-ELT Moves Closer To Reality
2011-12-09 10:21:32

[ Video 1 ] | [ Video 2 ] The governing body of the European Southern Observatory, the ESO Council, has approved ESO´s budget for 2012. This includes preparatory work on the road to the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) site at Cerro Armazones and the start of development of some very challenging optical components for the telescope. With several ESO Member States now having committed their part of the required additional funding, the final approval for the whole E-ELT...

Image 1 - Vampire Star Reveals Its Secrets
2011-12-07 05:55:54

[ Video 1 ] | [ Video 2 ] Astronomers have obtained the best images ever of a star that has lost most of its material to a vampire companion. By combining the light captured by four telescopes at ESO´s Paranal Observatory they created a virtual telescope 130 meters across with vision 50 times sharper than the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. Surprisingly, the new results show that the transfer of mass from one star to the other in this double system is gentler than expected....

Spanish Crown Prince Visits ESO's Paranal Observatory
2011-11-28 11:48:36

On 24 November 2011 ESO´s Paranal Observatory in Chile was honored by a visit from Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Asturias. The delegation, which also included the Spanish Minister of Science and Innovation, Dr. Cristina Garmendia, the Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Moreno, and the Chilean Minister of National Assets, Catalina Parot, first had the opportunity to hear a series of presentations about ESO at the Paranal Residencia. This session was also...

Image 1 - ESO: Full-size Mock-up Of World’s Largest Telescope Mirror

[ Watch Video 1 ] | [ Watch Video 2 ] On Saturday 15 October, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) opened the doors of its headquarters in Garching bei München, Bavaria, Germany, to the public. Throughout the day, thousands of visitors had the chance to help build a full-size mock-up mirror of the largest planned telescope in the world – the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) – and to experience many other aspects of ESO´s work. Around 3100...

[ Watch the Video ] At a ceremony Thursday in Santiago, Chile the Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Moreno and ESO´s Director General, Tim de Zeeuw, signed an agreement regarding the European Extremely Large Telescope. This agreement between ESO and the Chilean government includes the donation of land for the telescope, as well as a long-term concession to establish a protected area around it, and support from the Chilean government for the establishment of the E-ELT....

New Funding For European Extremely Large Telescope
2011-10-03 08:21:28

The Science Technology and Facilities Council (STFC) confirmed that it will provide nearly $5.5 million (US) to UK scientists to develop key instruments for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), which is slated to be the biggest optical and infrared telescope in the world. With funding in place, British astronomers will now be able to take a leading role in building the critical scientific instruments needed for the E-ELT, which will be constructed in Chile and should be complete...

VST and 268 megapixel OmegaCAM start work The VLT Survey Telescope (VST), the latest addition to ESO's Paranal Observatory, has made its first release of impressive images of the southern sky. The VST is a state-of-the-art 2.6-meter telescope, with the huge 268-megapixel camera OmegaCAM at its heart, which is designed to map the sky both quickly and with very fine image quality. It is a visible-light telescope that perfectly complements ESO's VISTA infrared survey telescope. New images of the...

This image of the nebula NGC 3582, which was captured by the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-meter telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile, shows giant loops of gas bearing a striking resemblance to solar prominences. These loops are thought to have been ejected by dying stars, but new stars are also being born within this stellar nursery. These energetic youngsters emit intense ultraviolet radiation that makes the gas in the nebula glow, producing the fiery display shown here....

Overwhelmingly Large Telescope -- The European Southern Observatory has undertaken a concept study for the next generation of ground-based Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). Dubbed OWL, ESO's concept is conceived as a 100 m. diameter optical and near-infrared, adaptive telescope. With milliarc second resolution and limiting magnitude V~38, OWL will be capable of imaging solar system objects at resolutions comparable to that offered by space probes, over much longer time scales. It...
