A graduate student from Montana State University is part of a team of researchers that revealed a new species of raptorial dinosaur to the public on Monday, the first definitive troodontid theropod discovered from the Late Cretaceous Period of North America in more than 75 years. MSU doctoral student Mike Knell, MSU paleontologist David Varricchio, three colleagues, and lead researcher Lindsay Zanno, from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and the Field Museum of Natural...

A new dinosaur species found in southern Utah has been identified, a fearsome looking creature that ate only plants, researchers say. Lindsay Zanno, a paleontologist at the Field Museum in Chicago, and her colleagues described Nothronychus graffami in a paper published Tuesday in Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The species is related to the velociraptor, the carnivorous dinosaurs made famous by the book and movie Jurassic Park, and to...

As news of a remarkably well-preserved cache of dinosaur bones was being heralded in media outlets around the world, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management paleontologist who had announced the find was taking a breath and urging others to do the same. No new species were turned up at the 3-month-old site, although a lot of digging is yet to be done. It is within the same Utah/ Colorado border region where at least two previously unheard-of dinosaur species were discovered during the past 10...

Scientists have caught a dinosaur in the act of evolving from meat-eater to vegetarian. The two-legged, feathered creature ate plants, but its bones show that the transition from its carnivorous ancestors was still in progress. All plant-eating dinosaurs were ultimately descended from a meat-eater, and switchovers to plant-eating occurred several times. The newly discovered species, which lived 125 million years ago in what is now Utah, could help scientists understand details of how the...

Suzhousaurus is a genus of therizinosaurid dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous Period. It was discovered in the Xinminpu Group of the Yujingzi Basin, Gansu, China. It was described by Li et al., who performed a cladistic analysis and found that Suzhousaurus is more derived than Beipiaosaurus and Falcarius, less derived than Alxasaurus and true therizinosaurids, and a relative of Nothronychus. Suzhousaurus is one of the largest known Early Cretaceous therizinosaurids, along with...

Falcarius, meaning "sickle cutter", is a genus of dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous Period (130 to 125 mya). This therizinosaurid dinosaur was the first of its kind to be found in North America. The fossils were found in east-central Utah, USA in 2005. Based on fossils recovered from another closely related specimen in China, scientists may clarify this specimen's relationship to the larger family of theropod dinosaurs. The site of discovery, Cedar Mountain Formation, was only a 2 acre plot....
