Pregnant women who took anti-depressants during pregnancy were found to be twice as likely to have a child diagnosed with autism or a similar disorder, according to a new study appearing in the Archives of General Psychiatry.Zoloft, Prozac, and similar anti-depressants, known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), may be especially risky early on in a pregnancy, the study suggests. A recent US study suggests that aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs, including ibuprofen and naproxen, may reduce the effectiveness of the most widely used anti-depressant medications -- selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), reports AFP. The finding, published this week in the online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, may explain why many depressed patients taking SSRIs do not respond to antidepressant treatment. Scientists at the Fisher Center for...

An estimated 19 million Americans suffer from depression, and though the symptoms might be recognizable, the brain chemistry that underlies them is incompletely understood. Research suggests that aberrant signaling by a chemical called Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) through its receptor TrkB, may contribute to anxiety and depression, and inhibiting this pathway in mice can reduce anxiety and depression-related behaviors. However, translating these findings to clinical studies will...

Drug maker GlaxoSmithKline released a new report detailing that its antidepressant Paxil could potentially make people with major depression more likely to become suicidal. But in clinical trials, the company found that attempted suicide rates were relatively low -- 0.34 percent for those using Paxil vs. 0.05 percent for those taking a placebo pill. The report also states that the findings couldn't rule out that the difference was due to chance. "The scientific evidence does not establish...

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) such as Prozac are regularly used to treat severe anxiety and depression. They work by immediately increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain and by causing long term changes in brain function. However it can take weeks of treatment before a patient feels any effect and both beneficial effects and side effects can persist after treatment is stopped. New research published by BioMed Central's open access journal Molecular Brain investigates...

The most widely prescribed antidepressants "“ medicines such as Prozac, Lexapro and Paxil "“ work by blocking the serotonin transporter, a brain protein that normally clears away the mood-regulating chemical serotonin. Or so the current thinking goes. That theory about how selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) work can now be put to the test with a new mouse model developed by neuroscientists at Vanderbilt University. These mice, described in the online edition of the Proceedings...

Berkeley Lab Reports New Fluorescent Assay Reveals TREK1 MechanismBy Lynn Yarris, Berkeley LabUsing a unique and relatively simple cell-based fluorescent assay they developed, scientists with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the University of California (UC), Berkeley have identified a means by which fluoxetine, the active ingredient in Prozac, suppresses the activity of the TREK1 potassium channel. TREK1 activity has been...
