2012-06-27 05:41:12

Enid Burns for redOrbit.com With the limited real estate on the screen of a cell phone, it's important to make each feature count. Mozilla just released a new version of its Firefox browser specifically for the Android market. The new browser has new tabs, add-ons and sync with a user's desktop and other devices. The new version of the Firefox for Android has been available for several months in beta, but version 14 was just officially released, and is a stable version of what's been...

Enid Burns for redOrbit.com Whether they stick with Internet Explorer 7 because they don't like change, or they don't notice the Windows Update icon in the system tray, about 4 percent of internet users worldwide still use Internet Explorer 7. The headache it causes web designers reaches migraine levels to continue coding for an outdated browser is well represented by an online consumer electronics dealer based in Australia. Kogan.com has instituted a highly avoidable 6.8 percent tax for...

An interesting change is about to occur in the global browser battles as Firefox rolls out its latest version in the Russian market. No longer will Russian search engine Yandex be the default browser, instead, Russians will see Google search results. The Yandex search service, which was added as the default option in Russian-language Firefox builds starting in early 2009, has a market share in Russia of approximately 60 percent while Google currently enjoys about 26.5 percent, writes...

First, it was discovered that Windows 8 won´t be too keen on allowing third party web browsers to be installed, drawing the ire of Mozilla´s CEO. Enid Burns for RedOrbit.com Competition between Google's Chrome browser and Microsoft's Internet Explorer is red hot. Last week the search giant's browser beat out the software giant's, and this week the internet is looking at month-long tallies to see just how swiftly Chrome is stepping into the lead for market share on browsers. Mobile may be the battleground for the browser war. In the year ending in January, the research firm statCounter found that global access from mobile devices,...

Michael Harper for RedOrbit.com Yesterday, it seemed that Google´s Chrome web browser had narrowly edged out Microsoft´s Internet Explorer. But that was yesterday, and today is a new day with new statistics and new debates to be had. Microsoft, it turns out, thinks the data used to come up with this statistic is flawed, and prefers to use another traffic measurement site which, conveniently enough, rates IE considerably higher than Chrome. The source of yesterday´s...

Enid Burns for RedOrbit The Google Chrome user base continues to grow, and according to data collected by StatCounter, it now exceeds the user base of Internet Explorer by a few percent. Over the past year Google's open source browser has made a steady climb from about 20 percent of the market to somewhere around 33 percent. Meanwhile, Chrome users passed Firefox toward the end of last year, and Explorer just last week. "This has been a two browser market going back to Netscape," said...

Remember the 90s, when rockstars wore flannel, smartphones were all but non-existent and Windows 95 was the best operating system out there? Do you also remember when Microsoft had run into some antitrust problems because Windows users didn´t have a choice of which web browser to use? It seems history could repeat itself as Mozilla is claiming Microsoft´s new operating system Windows RT (or runtime, previously known as Windows on ARM) has some technical restrictions, keeping their...

On Friday, Adobe released an emergency patch to address a critical vulnerability in their Flash Player software -- a vulnerability which hackers had been using to trick users into downloading malware delivered via email. According to Gregg Keizer of Computerworld, all versions of the software contain the vulnerability, and Adobe is recommending that users download the patch regardless of their browser or operating system, though only users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer are currently...

Word of the Day
attercop
  • A spider.
  • Figuratively, a peevish, testy, ill-natured person.
'Attercop' comes from the Old English 'atorcoppe,' where 'atter' means 'poison, venom' and‎ 'cop' means 'spider.' 'Coppa' is a derivative of 'cop,' top, summit, round head, or 'copp,' cup, vessel, which refers to 'the supposed venomous properties of spiders,' says the OED. 'Copp' is still found in the word 'cobweb.'
