By DYKES, Mervyn Northern whitebaiters opened the new season yesterday to a reminder that two adult forms of the delicacy have been listed as threatened species by the Department of Conservation. One, the giant kokupu, has been given a similar threat ranking to brown kiwi. The other listed as threatened is the shortjaw kokupu. The Galaxiids are a family of mostly small freshwater fish. Representatives occur throughout the southern hemisphere, including South Africa, South America, New Zealand, Australia, Lord Howe Island, New Caledonia and the Falkland Islands. One species of Galaxiid, Galaxias maculatus is probably the most widely naturally distributed freshwater fish in the world.
