Mankind has been fascinated with geckos for centuries, but we still don’t understand how the gecko achieves the adhesive strength with which they climb and cling to nearly any surface.
Engineers fascinated with geckos have used the tiny lizards’ climbing ability as inspiration in developing adhesive systems that allow humans to climb once un-climbable surfaces.
Move over, Geico, there's a new gecko in town: Paroedura hordiesi.
Found in warm regions of the world, geckos are extremely capable of climbing up steep, smooth surfaces. To do so, they employ an adhesive system — a key evolutionary innovation that facilitates climbing vertically, and even in inverted positions.
The Gulf Sand gecko is a remarkable desert reptile in that it is the only lizard found habitually on sabkha substrate across large parts of the eastern Arabian Peninsula. These arid salt flats constitute one of the harshest habitats on earth, due to their extraordinary salinity.
Five geckos sent into space so that researchers could analyze their reproductive habits in microgravity have died in orbit, officials from the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) confirmed.
The uncanny ability of geckos to adhere to nearly any surface and even walk on ceilings is the result of a biological mechanism in their toes that the lizards can instantly turn on or off, according to new research appearing in the latest edition of the Journal of Applied Physics.

Geckos are small to moderately large lizards belonging to the family Gekkonidae. These lizards are found in warm climates throughout the world. Geckos are unique among lizards in their vocalizations, making chirping sounds in social interactions with other geckos. Geckos are unusual in other respects as well. Many species have specialized toe pads that enable them to climb smooth vertical surfaces and even cross indoor ceilings with ease. These antics are well-known to persons living in...
