Bumblebee Gecko Discovered In Papua New Guinea
2012-04-20 04:43:34

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), a new species of gecko has been discovered in Papua New Guinea. Dressed in black and yellow stripes, biologists from the Papua New Guinea National Museum say the gecko resembles a bumblebee. Its unique coloring and rows of skin nodules act as camouflage for the gecko who lives on the forest floor. According to the survey, specimens of the new lizard measure about 5 inches long from head to tail. Specimens were captured in 2010 in Sohoniliu...

Image 1 - Super-Adhesive Material Inspired By Gecko Feet
2012-02-18 04:49:03

For years, biologists have been amazed by the power of gecko feet, which let these 5-ounce lizards produce an adhesive force roughly equivalent to carrying nine pounds up a wall without slipping. Now, a team of polymer scientists and a biologist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have discovered exactly how the gecko does it, leading them to invent "Geckskin," a device that can hold 700 pounds on a smooth wall. Doctoral candidate Michael Bartlett in Alfred Crosby´s polymer...

Gecko-inspired Tank Robot
2011-11-01 09:55:38

[ Watch the Video ] Researchers have developed a tank-like robot that has the ability to scale smooth walls, opening up a series of applications ranging from inspecting pipes, buildings, aircraft and nuclear power plants to deployment in search and rescue operations. Their study, published today, 1 November, in IOP Publishing's journal Smart Materials and Structures, is the first to apply this unique, bioinspired material to a robot that operates in a tank-like manner. This method...

Humidity softens setae to tighten gecko's gripHuman adhesives are famed for their fallibility. Gooey glues soon lose their grip, are easily contaminated and leave residues behind. But not gecko feet. Geckos can cling on repeatedly to the smoothest surfaces thanks to the self-cleaning microscopic spatula-shaped hairs (setae) that coat the soles of their feet. Back in 2002, Kellar Autumn found that these dry hairs are in such intimate contact with surfaces that the reptiles 'glue' themselves on...

Geckos inspire new method to print electronics on complex surfaces Geckos are masters at sticking to surfaces of all kinds and easily unsticking themselves, too. Inspired by these lizards, a team of engineers has developed a reversible adhesion method for printing electronics on a variety of tricky surfaces such as clothes, plastic and leather. Researchers from Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign designed a clever square polymer stamp that allows them to...
