Japanese scientists have taken the first photographs of one of the most mysterious creatures in the deep ocean -- the giant squid.

It took only a minute for scientists to discover a new deep-sea species with an experimental infrared camera built in Southern California and light-emitting artificial lure. Now, the National Science Foundation has agreed to spend $500,000 to refine the concept.

The Kraken is a legendary sea monster that lives in the waters off Norway and Greenland. The legend itself may have originated from sightings of giant squid that can grow 40 - 50 feet in length.
