Scientists are reporting discovery of an improved way to remove carbon dioxide – the major greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming – from smokestacks and other sources, including the atmosphere. Their report on the process, which achieves some of the highest carbon dioxide removal capacity ever reported for real-world conditions where the air contains moisture, appears in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Alain Goeppert, G. K. Surya Prakash, chemistry...

A drastic decrease in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels appears to have been the catalyst that led to the formation of the Antarctic ice sheet, according to a new study published December 1 in the journal Science. The research, which was completed by an international team of experts led by Mark Pagani of Yale University, "helps solve a long-standing scientific puzzle and confirms the power of CO2 to dramatically alter global climate," according to a Thursday press release from the...

Cleargreen Advisors has launched a scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions accounting and reporting service to help companies measure the greenhouse gas impacts, risks, and opportunities across their entire value chain. Boulder, CO (PRWEB) December 02, 2011 Sustainability consulting firm Cleargreen Advisors has launched a new service to help companies develop Scope 3 (value chain) greenhouse gas emissions inventories. In addition to years of carbon accounting and reporting experience, Cleargreen...

Greenhouse Gases Reach Record Highs, WMO Reports
2011-11-22 06:15:52

Carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide levels reached record highs in 2010, surpassing what experts had previously called the worst-case scenario for these greenhouse gases, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced on Monday. The WMO, which is the U.N.'s weather agency, reported that CO2 levels increased by 2.3 parts per million, to 389 ppm, from 2009 to last year, according to Reuters reporter Tom Miles. That single-year increase exceeds the average for both the 1990s...

carboNZero certification has been achieved by Dove Medical Press, the first medical and scientific publisher to become carbon neutral by measuring, managing, reducing and mitigating the emissions they canât reduce by purchasing verified carbon credits. The emissions for the 2010-2011 period were verified by an independent auditor at 10.61 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents. This is equivalent to the emissions created from driving around 45,000km in a medium sized petrol car....

When biomass is combusted the carbon that once was bound in the growing tree is released into the atmosphere. For this reason, bioenergy is often considered carbon dioxide neutral. Research at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, however, shows that this is a simplification. The use of bioenergy may affect ecosystem carbon stocks, and it can take anything from 2 to 100 years for different biofuels to achieve carbon dioxide neutrality. "Using a tree as biofuel creates a carbon dioxide debt...

[ Watch the Video ] NOAA´s updated Annual Greenhouse Gas Index (AGGI), which measures the direct climate influence of many greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, shows a continued steady upward trend that began with the Industrial Revolution of the 1880s. Started in 2004, the AGGI reached 1.29 in 2010. That means the combined heating effect of long-lived greenhouse gases added to the atmosphere by human activities has increased by 29 percent since 1990, the...

Image 1 - Methane Could Be The Answer To 56-million-year Question

Rice researchers show ocean could have contained enough methane to cause drastic climate change The release of massive amounts of carbon from methane hydrate frozen under the seafloor 56 million years ago has been linked to the greatest change in global climate since a dinosaur-killing asteroid presumably hit Earth 9 million years earlier. New calculations by researchers at Rice University show that this long-controversial scenario is quite possible. Nobody knows for sure what started...

Earth's Atmosphere

Earth's Atmosphere -- Earth's atmosphere consists of nitrogen (78.1%) and oxygen (20.9%), with small amounts of argon (0.9%), carbon dioxide (variable, but around 0.035%), water vapor, and other gases. The atmosphere protects life on Earth by absorbing ultraviolet solar radiation and reducing temperature extremes between day and night. 75% of the atmosphere exists within 11km of the planetary surface. Temperature and the Atmospheric Layers The temperature of the Earth's atmosphere...
