By MARC KAUFMAN By Marc Kaufman The Washington Post WASHINGTON NASA Administrator Michael Griffin has clashed repeatedly with the White House in recent months - a rift that escalated when budget officials heavily edited a statement he was submitting to Congress about China's space ambitions and spilled into the open last week in a leaked e-mail that accused the budget office of doing "everything possible" to walk away from the $100 billion international space station. Despite...

By Nilda Rego Part 2 of 3: Ninety-SIX-YEAR-OLD Bess Griffin Girgich and her twin brother, Tom Griffin, met with us this August to talk about the history of their family, which settled on a farm in the Alhambra Valley 140 years ago. Bess handed me a stapled stack of stiff papers filled with writing that looked as if they had been double-copied the wrong way on a printer. She smiled at my puzzled frown and said she wanted me to see how her grandparents coped with a shortage of paper in...

By Christopher Blank The last time comedienne and self-proclaimed "D-list" celebrity Kathy Griffin came to Memphis, she was thrown off by how friendly the locals were. "I thought it might be a big put-on," she said during a recent phone interview. "I went out shopping and people kept running up to me, saying how much they loved me. The people there were just soooooo nice." If Griffin is wary about smiling faces and flattery, she probably ought to be. A large part of her stand-up routine,...

By Alan Pergament At first glance, politically incorrect, D-list celebrity Kathy Griffin and politically connected, A-List journalist Helen Thomas don't appear to have a lot in common. But two television programs -- HBO's "Thank You Mr. President, Helen Thomas at the White House" and the season finale of "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" -- both based in Washington, D.C., illustrate that they both are daring, they both enjoy speaking their minds, and neither of them minds being in...

By JON W. POSES It hasn't been a good few days for jazz's health. On July 25, saxophonist icon Johnny Griffin, 80, passed away, as did the gifted, versatile guitarist Hiram Bullock, who was only 52. The loss of Griffin reminds us of those stories that are timed annually to Memorial Day and/or Veterans Day. I speak of the "features" that we read each late May and mid-November covering the rapid death rate of those who served during World War I and World War II. At this point, there is...

U.S. comedienne and TV personality Kathy Griffin says she has no intention of having more plastic surgery. I've been off the junk, as I call it, for five years, Usmagazine.com quoted Griffin as saying in an interview for the September issue of Fitness magazine. I've had a face lift, eye job and all that stuff five years ago. What I found, though, was that it didn't help me one bit. It didn't get me happier or didn't make me look particularly younger, she explained, adding that she has...

Word of the Day
Cthulhu
  • A gigantic fictional humanoid alien god being described with a head resembling an octopus and dragon wings and claws, around whom an insane cult developed.
  • Pertaining to the mythos of Cthulhu and additional otherworldly beings created by H. P. Lovecraft or inspired by his writings and imitators.
This word was invented in 1926 by H.P. Lovecraft for his short story, 'The Call of Cthulhu.' 'Cthulhu' may be based on the word 'chthonic,' which in Greek mythology refers to the underworld.
