Blurred by odd shadows and striations, the silhouettes on these sonar images are the biggest clues in more than 60 years to the fate of his father's World War II submarine, the USS Grunion.
Grunion are sardine-sized fish in the Atherinopsidae family of New World silversides. They are found only off the coast of California, USA and Baja California, Mexico (found on both the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California coasts).
