Lee Rannals for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online The Air Force's new aircraft of the future crashed during a hypersonic test flight, hitting a speed bump in the future of creating quick flights from New York to London. The X-51A WaveRider was designed to reach Mach 6, or 3,600 mph, after being dropped from a B-52 bomber. The aircraft underwent a test on Tuesday, and was brought out off the Southern California coast to experience a few minutes of flying at hypersonic speeds....

Lee Rannals for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online The next generation of flight is undergoing a test tomorrow over the Pacific Ocean, paving the way for non-stop Paris trips in just a few hours in the future. The X-51A WaveRider is being prepared at Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert. This aircraft could take you from New York to London in less than an hour. The experimental aircraft uses a "scramjet" engine that allows it to travel at hypersonic speeds, reaching Mach 4.5...

Shell Degradation Cause Of DARPA Hypersonic Vehicle Flight Abort
2012-04-22 03:57:05

An experimental hypersonic glider was forced to abort its 13,000 mph flight over the Pacific Ocean during the summer of 2011 because larger than expected portions of its skin peeled off, officials from the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced on Friday. According to the Associated Press (AP), the Hypersonic Technology Vehicle-2 (HTV-2) launched atop a rocket from California's Vandenberg Air Force Base last August 11 as part of research into the development of...

Army’s Super Secret Hypersonic Weapon Undergoes Testing

The US Army conducted its first flight test of its new Advanced Hypersonic Weapon (AHW), launching the high-tech bomb from the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai on Thursday. After launch, the rocket glided through the upper atmosphere over the Pacific “at hypersonic speed” before reaching its target on the Kwajalein atoll in the Marshall Islands, according to a statement made by the Pentagon. The rocket made the trip from Kauai to Kwajalein -- some 2,500 miles...

An experimental US Air Force aircraft set a record for hypersonic flight Thursday by flying over 3 minutes at Mach 6, which is six times the speed of sound. The Air Force reported on its website that the X-51A Waverider was released from a B-52 Stratofortress off the southern California coast Wednesday morning.  Its scramjet engine accelerated the vehicle to Mach 6, and it flew autonomously for 200 seconds before losing acceleration.  At that point the test was then terminated....

When a jet is flying faster than the speed of sound, one small mistake can tear it apart. And when the jet is so experimental that it must fly unmanned, only a computer control system can pilot it. Ohio State University engineers have designed control system software that can do just that -- by adapting to changing conditions during a flight. Government agencies have been developing faster-than-sound vehicles for decades. The latest supersonic combustion ramjets -- called scramjets -- burn...
