The Swamp Rabbit (Sylvilagus aquaticus) is a species of cottontail rabbit found in the swamps and wetlands of the southern United States. Swamp rabbits are skilled swimmers and often cross streams, ponds and rivers. It will also hide from predators by sitting in shallow water, exposing only its nose to the air to breathe. Regarding the etymology of 'humgruffin,' the OED says (rather unhelpfully) that it's a 'made-up word.' We might guess that 'hum' comes from 'humbug' or possibly 'hum' meaning 'a disagreeable smell,' while 'gruffin' could be a combination of 'gruff' and 'griffin.'
