In an exclusive interview with Physics World, astronaut Drew Feustel gives a vivid account of his two missions into space and recalls his determination to make his childhood ambition — space flight — come true. In the video, Feustel discusses his two missions — his maiden flight in 2009, as part of a team sent to repair the Hubble Space telescope, and his return to space in 2011 as the lead spacewalker on Endeavour's final mission to the International Space Station....

Astronomers Discover 'Waterworld' Planet
2012-02-21 14:30:13

Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have discovered a new class of planet, completely enveloped by water. The "waterworld" planet has a thick, steamy atmosphere and is smaller than Uranus but larger than Earth. "GJ1214b is like no planet we know of," Zachory Berta of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) said in a press release. "A huge fraction of its mass is made up of water." The planet is about 2.7 times Earth's diameter, and weighs almost seven times...

Hubble Zooms In On Magnified Galaxy
2012-02-03 04:56:53

Thanks to the presence of a natural "zoom lens" in space, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope got a uniquely close-up look at the brightest "magnified" galaxy yet discovered. This observation provides a unique opportunity to study the physical properties of a galaxy vigorously forming stars when the universe was only one-third its present age. A so-called gravitational lens is produced when space is warped by a massive foreground object, whether it is the sun, a black hole or an entire...
