Scientists in New Zealand have discovered a rare, endangered frog breeding in the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, near the capital of Wellington.

The Maud Island frog is native to New Zealand, first discovered in the 1940’s. Originally classified as the same species as the Hamilton’s frog, it was reclassified in 1998 as its own species. The Maud Island frog is one of the oldest species known. It has been in existence for roughly 200 million years. In 2006, 60 Maud Island frogs were introduced to a predator free sanctuary.
