Brett Smith for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online More naturally moving prosthetic legs currently in development will dramatically boost the mobility of lower-limb amputees and allow them to effectively navigate stairs, slopes and uneven ground, according to a recent perspective article in the journal Science Translational Medicine from Michael Goldfarb, a mechanical engineering professor at Vanderbilt University. Over the last decade, Goldfarb and his team have been conducting...

[ Watch the Video ] This powered prosthetic is better at anticipating the next move Craig Hutto considers himself part bionic man. In 2005, doctors amputated his leg after a shark attacked him during a fishing trip off the Florida Gulf Coast. "I was 16 years old at the time," recalls Hutto. "My brother heard me yell: 'What was that?' He saw something take me under; he saw the back fin of the shark. There was so much tissue damage and so much flesh gone that it was just irreparable."...

Researchers at Vanderbilt University have developed a new lower-limb prosthetic that allows amputees to walk with a natural gait. The device uses new technology to give it bionic capabilities and is the first prosthetic with a powered knee and ankle joints that operate in unison.  The prosthetic comes equipped with sensors that monitor its user's motion and has microprocessors to use this data to predict what the person is trying to do and operate the device in ways that facilitate...

Combine a mechanical arm with a miniature rocket motor:  The result is a prosthetic device that is the closest thing yet to a bionic arm. A prototype of this radical design has been successfully developed and tested by a team of mechanical engineers at Vanderbilt University as part of a $30 million federal program to develop advanced prosthetic devices. "Our design does not have superhuman strength or capability, but it is closer in terms of function and power to a human arm than any...
