Pac-Man Seen Near Saturnpacman
2012-11-26 21:52:11

Lee Rannals for redOrbit.com — Your Universe Online NASA announced on Monday its Cassini spacecraft has helped to discover a "video gamers' paradise" at Saturn. The space agency said scientists have spotted a second feature shaped like the 1980s video game icon Pac Man in the Saturn system on the moon Tethys. The pattern found appears in the thermal data obtained by Cassini composite infrared spectrometer. "Finding a second Pac-Man in the Saturn system tells us that the...

Mimas Disturbs Saturn's B-ring
2012-09-11 05:20:55

April Flowers for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online The European Space Agency (ESA) released an image of Saturn's rings on Monday provided by NASA's Cassini spacecraft. Clumpy particles in the B-ring are in stark contrast to the delicately ordered ringlets of the rest of Saturn's rings. Saturn's B-ring is the largest and brightest of the gas giant's rings, the outer portion of which can be seen on the left side of the image. The moon, Mimas, which orbits Saturn once during every...

Cassini Spots Tiny Moon Methone
2012-05-22 04:03:14

NASA's Cassini spacecraft made its closest approach to Saturn's tiny moon Methone as part of a trajectory that will take it on a close flyby of another of Saturn's moons, Titan. The Titan flyby will put the spacecraft in an orbit around Saturn that is inclined, or tilted, relative to the plane of the planet's equator. The flyby of Methone took place on May 20 at a distance of about 1,200 miles (1,900 kilometers). It was Cassini's closest flyby of the 2-mile-wide (3-kilometer-wide) moon. The...

Cassini Captures New Images Of Saturnian Moons
2011-12-13 04:35:07

NASA's Cassini spacecraft successfully completed its closest-ever pass over Saturn's moon Dione on Monday, Dec. 12, slaloming its way through the Saturn system on its way to tomorrow's close flyby of Titan. Cassini is expected to glide about 2,200 miles (3,600 kilometers) over the Titan surface on Dec. 13. In the selection of the raw images obtained during the Cassini Dione flyby, Dione is sometimes joined by other moons. Mimas appears just beyond the dark side of Dione in one view. In...

NASA announced Tuesday that the Cassini spacecraft passed by and snapped images of several of Saturn's moons. The space agency said the Cassini spacecraft passed within 37,282 miles of Enceladus and 17,398 miles of Helene.  The spacecraft also shot an image of Mimas in front of Saturn's rings. NASA said that one of Cassini's images is looking at the famous jets erupting from the south polar terrain of Enceladus. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the...

Scientists believe they finally understand why one of the most dynamic regions in Saturn's rings has such an irregular and varying shape, thanks to images captured by NASA's Cassini spacecraft. And the answer, published online November 1 in the Astronomical Journal, is this: The rings are behaving like a miniature version of our own Milky Way galaxy. This new insight, garnered from images of Saturn's most massive ring, the B ring, may answer another long-standing question: What causes the...

Taking a long-weekend road trip, NASA's Cassini spacecraft successfully glided near nine Saturnian moons, sending back a stream of raw images as mementos of its adrenaline-fueled expedition. The spacecraft sent back particularly intriguing images of the moons Dione and Rhea. The Dione and Rhea pictures are the highest-resolution views yet of parts of their surfaces. The views of the southern part of Dione's leading hemisphere (the part of the moon that faces forward in its orbit around...

Scientists using data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft have learned that distinctive, colorful bands and splotches embellish the surfaces of Saturn's inner, mid-size moons. The reddish and bluish hues on the icy surfaces of Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione and Rhea appear to be the aftermath of bombardments large and small. A paper based on the findings was recently published online in the journal Icarus. In it, scientists describe prominent global patterns that trace the trade routes for...

The highest-resolution-yet temperature map and images of Saturn's icy moon Mimas obtained by NASA's Cassini spacecraft reveal surprising patterns on the surface of the small moon, including unexpected hot regions that resemble "Pac-Man" eating a dot, and striking bands of light and dark in crater walls. "Other moons usually grab the spotlight, but it turns out Mimas is more bizarre than we thought it was," said Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in...

Saturn's moon Mimas -- Mimas is a moon of Saturn that was discovered in 1789 by William Herschel. Mimas' low density (1.17) indicates that it is composed mostly of water ice with only a small amount of rock. Mimas' most distinctive feature is a colossal impact crater 130 km across, named Herschel after the moon's discoverer. Herschel covers almost 1/3 of the diameter of the entire moon; its walls are approximately 5 km high, parts of its floor measure 10 km deep, and its central peak...
