Bill Dana was an aeronautical engineer, a test pilot and an astronaut. He retired on May 29, 1998, a few months shy of 40 years of distinguished service to NASA and passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at the age of 83.
The planned retirement of the space shuttle fleet in 2010 will bring to a close an era that opened in the Antelope Valley nearly a half century ago. The vehicle which began that era â€“ the M2-F1 â€“ was an unlikely forefather to the shuttle.
