By VINCE GLEDHILL CONTROVERSIAL plans for an opencast mine next to a town were given the go-ahead today. Hundreds of people objected to UK Coal's plans to dig up 600 acres of open land at Potland Burn, north of Ashington.

A HIGH school became a learning village today as part of a pounds 12m revamp of education in a North East town. Cramlington Community High School has been renamed Cramlington Learning Village and will cater for pupils aged 11 to 18.
