NASA will hold a media briefing at 12 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, March 13, to discuss the upcoming launch of the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). The mission will use advanced optics and detectors, allowing astronomers to observe the high-energy X-ray sky with much greater sensitivity and clarity than any mission flown to-date. The televised briefing will take place in the agency's television studio at NASA Headquarters, located at 300 E St. S.W. in Washington. NuSTAR will advance...

NuSTAR's Mirrors Baked In Zhang's Glass Kitchen

It pays to persevere. No one knows this better than Will Zhang. For more than a decade, the astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., experimented with a new technique for efficiently manufacturing super-thin, low-cost curved telescope mirror segments to collect and focus ever-elusive, high-energy X-ray photons. The fruits of that labor -- a total of 9,000 individual mirror segments -- are now assembled into telescope optics and installed inside NASA's...

NASA's NuSTAR Ships To Vandenberg For March 14 Launch

NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR, shipped to Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., on Tuesday, to be mated to its Pegasus launch vehicle. The observatory will detect X-rays from objects ranging from our sun to giant black holes billions of light-years away. It is scheduled to launch March 14 from an aircraft operating out of Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. "The NuSTAR mission is unique because it will be the first NASA mission to focus X-rays in the high-energy...

A massive old star is about to die a spectacular death. As its nuclear fuel runs out, it begins to collapse under its own tremendous weight. The crushing pressure inside the star skyrockets, triggering new nuclear reactions, setting the stage for a terrifying blast. And then... nothing happens. At least that's what supercomputers have been telling astrophysicists for decades. Many of the best computer models of supernova explosions fail to produce an explosion. Instead, according to the...

The U.S. space agency has selected the Orbital Sciences Corp. to launch the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR, high energy X-ray telescope. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said the spacecraft is to be launched by the Dulles, Va., corporation in 2011 from the Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site located on the Pacific Ocean's Kwajalein Atoll. NASA said the total cost of the NuSTAR launch services is approximately $36 million dollars. NuSTAR is expected to...
