Jake Peavy struck out eight over seven innings Friday and combined with three relievers to bring the Chicago White Sox a 2-0 win over Detroit. The loss by the Tigers, combined with a Minnesota victory over Kansas City, cut Detroit's lead over the Twins to two games in the American League Central. The Tigers and Twins will play four times in Detroit beginning next Monday. Chicago acquired Peavy (8-6) from San Diego in July in hopes he could ignite a late rush to the division title.

The Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 Sunday on a walk-off solo home run by Mark Ellis. Ellis, who went 2-for-3 in the game, connected on a two-out fastball off Bobby Jenks (2-4) who had come in to pitch the ninth. Scott Hairston, Nomar Garciaparra and Rajai Davis each had a pair of hits for the A's. Bartolo Colon and three relievers combined on a six-hit shutout Saturday and the White Sox offense pummeled Minnesota for an 8-0 Chicago win. Colon (1-0) surrendered three hits in six innings before a mop-up by relievers Octavio Dotel, Matt Thornton and Mike MacDougal. At the plate, Corky Miller and Alexei RamÃrez led the way with two hits and two RBI apiece. One of two hits for Carlos Quentin was a seventh-inning solo homer.
