100th Anniversary Of First South Pole Expedition

Explorers, scientists, and the prime minister of Norway gathered at the South Pole Wednesday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the date that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first man to ever lead a successful expedition to the Antarctic site.

A race to the South Pole has been something of a replay of the first historic one, with a Norwegian team defeating a British team. Rune Malterud and Stian Aker of Team Missing Link, both members of the Norwegian military, finished the race Wednesday, the Daily Telegraph reported.
