A dietary ingredient derived from a melon rich in antioxidant superoxide dismutase enzymes has been shown to relieve stress. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, published in BioMed Central's open access Nutrition Journal, researchers found that the supplement decreased the signs and symptoms of perceived stress and fatigue in healthy volunteers. Marie-Anne Milesi from Seppic, France, worked with a team of researchers to evaluate its anti-stress effects in 70 volunteers....

A potent antioxidant enzyme made in the mitochondria reduces or prevents the memory and learning impairments of Alzheimer's disease in animals and could provide new direction to treating the disease, said researchers from Baylor College of Medicine and New York University in a new report.Superoxide dismutase (SOD-2), an enzyme made in the cell's mitochondria, also reduced the levels of superoxide(reactive oxygen) that is implicated in Alzheimer's disease, said Dr. Robia Pautler, assistant...

Aug. 9, 2005 "” Scientists have used a glowing protein from fireflies to observe the activity of a molecule that is an important target for new drugs to treat cancer, autoimmune diseases and several other disorders. The target molecule, known as IKK (for IKappa kinase), regulates processes that can trigger dramatic changes in cellular physiology. Scientists have linked these changes to many different disorders. "Our new system allows researchers to monitor whether drugs for these...

EXPANDED ABSTRACT KEY WORDS: * superoxide dismutase * reactive oxygen species Manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD)3 is a nuclear-encoded antioxidant enzyme that localizes to the mitochondria (1). Increased expression of MnSOD suppresses cancer phenotypes in a large number of human and murine tumors (2). MnSOD can also regulate tumor formation in MnSOD-overexpressing and MnSOD-deficient mice by modulating apoptotic and proliferation pathways in situ (3,4). The presence of MnSOD in...
