Australian scientists have devised a way to model polluted groundwater with computer simulation — and better protect the Earth´s main fresh water supply. Researchers at the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT) have developed a new model to predict where — and how fast — polluted groundwater can move from a contaminated site, allowing water managers to better locate and clean up the water. This could help defeat an emerging threat beneath...

The solar energy of sunshine heats the desert floor. Heat rises thence as plumes of hot air (this is what makes the desert scene wavy) that heat the bottom few meters of the atmosphere. That layer of heated air is gravitationally unstable. On occasion it rises as a high-power vortex called a dust devil. If we can put men on the moon, we should be able to make stationary dust devils and get wind power out of them. Volney Wallace Murray (c) 2008 Deseret News (Salt Lake City). Provided...

Something strange is happening in the atmosphere above Africa and researchers have converged on Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to discuss the phenomenon. The Africa Space Weather Workshop kicked off Nov. 12th with nearly 100 scientists and students in attendance. The strange phenomenon that brings all these people together is the ion plume"”"a newly discovered form of space weather," says University of Colorado atmospheric scientist and Workshop co-organizer Tim Fuller-Rowell. Researchers...

On March 12, 2008, Cassini will swing by Saturn's moon Enceladus at an altitude of less than 100 kilometres at the point of closest approach.  This will give scientists and unprecedented opportunity to study the plumes of water vapour emanating from the "tiger stripe" fissures near the moon's south pole, but it has also given the Cassini team pause for thought as to whether ice grains lofted by the jets could damage the spacecraft. Dr Larry Esposito, who is presenting results of a study...
