Black Hole Afterburner Moves At The Speed Of Light
2012-10-23 09:02:38

A supersonic jet of material that looks amazingly similar to the afterburner flow of a fighter jet is blasting over two million light-years from the center of a distant galaxy.

Astronomers Measure Black Hole Radius
2012-09-27 19:16:53

An international team of astronomers was able to measure the radius of a black hole for the first time.

X-ray Signal Detected During Black Hole's Destruction Of Passing Star
2012-08-03 15:48:00

Astronomers have identified an X-ray signal that followed an observation made last year of a quiescent black hole in a distant galaxy. The black hole discovered by the team last year was seen erupting after shredding and consuming a passing star.

New Hubble Image Shows Space Geyser
2012-07-03 14:32:32

The Hubble Space Telescope has unleashed a new image of a geyser of hot gas flowing from a newborn star.

New research published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society indicates that black holes are able to change gears, similar to an engine.

Gamma Rays From Milky Way’s Past Show Historically Active Black Hole
2012-05-30 03:39:18

Gamma-ray beams seen in the Milky Way's central black hole suggest that the galaxy's center was much more active in the past, according to new research.

Spitzer Telescope Finds Hidden Jet
2012-03-02 04:03:59

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope took this image of a baby star sprouting two identical jets (green lines emanating from fuzzy star).

XMM-Newton Measures The Power Of Black-hole Driven Outflows
2012-02-28 05:01:35

A curious correlation between the mass of a galaxy's central black hole and the velocity of stars in a vast, roughly spherical structure known as its bulge has puzzled astronomers for years.

Astronomers Clock Record Wind In Stellar-Mass Black Hole
2012-02-21 15:21:23

Astronomers have clocked the fastest wind yet ever discovered blowing off a disk around a stellar-mass black hole.

Microquasar -- Microquasars are smaller cousins of quasars. They are named after quasars, as they have some common characteristics: strong and variable radio emission often seen as radio jets, and an accretion disk surrounding a black hole. In quasars, the black hole is supermassive (millions of solar masses) as in microquasars, the black hole mass is a few solar masses. In microquasars, the accreted mass comes from a normal star and the accretion disk is very luminous in optical regions...
