Recording artist Chris Brown was sentenced in a Los Angeles court Tuesday to 1,400 hours of labor-oriented service for beating up his singer-girlfriend Rihanna. Brown, 20, pleaded guilty in June to felony assault for attacking Rihanna, 21, in Los Angeles in February. After the sentence was handed down, the Los Angeles Times reported Brown was involved in at least two prior domestic violence incidents.
Montreal hockey great Guy Lafleur was spared jail time but put on probation for a year for lying about his son's activities while on bail. Police in Oregon said a woman arrested in 2006 for keeping more than 200 rabbits has again been arrested for hoarding 13 bunnies in her hotel room. Former Chicago Bears fullback Roland Harper has been sentenced to 2 years probation for his conviction on contract fraud. Harper pleaded guilty last year to pretending to be a minority owner in order to help a white-owned business obtain public contracts set aside for minority firms, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday. A former California schools official convicted of taking a half-full bottle of ketchup from Chapman University has been ordered to stay away from the college. Steve Rocco, a former Orange Unified School District trustee, was sentenced Tuesday to two years of informal probation, fined $150 and banned for two years from all Chapman University campuses, the Orange County (Calif.) Register reported Wednesday. Rocco told the court he took the bottle because he was planning to recycle it.
