Tile Makers Creating Orion Shield
2012-03-07 04:41:41

Workers recently began cutting and coating the first thermal protection system tiles — part of the heat shield that will protect an Orion spacecraft during an upcoming flight test which will simulate the re-entry speed and heating of returning from deep space. The tiles are made of the same material and coating as those used on the space shuttle's belly. On Orion, however, the tiles will be placed along the sides and top of the conical spacecraft. A separate heat shield akin to the...

NASA Conducts New Orion Parachute Test
2012-03-02 04:18:19

On Feb. 29, NASA successfully conducted another drop test of the Orion crew vehicle's entry, descent and landing parachutes high above the Arizona desert in preparation for the vehicle's orbital flight test in 2014. Orion will carry astronauts deeper into space than ever before, provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during space travel and ensure a safe re-entry and landing. An Air Force C-17 plane dropped a test version of Orion from an altitude of 25,000 feet above the...

Orion Test Flight Planned For 2014
2012-01-31 05:34:08

NASA said it is aiming for an unmanned test flight of its Orion spacecraft beyond lower Earth orbit in early 2014. The spacecraft, being developed by NASA and Lockheed Martin, will loop twice around Earth, extending nearly 3,700 miles away. This distance will be the farthest the U.S. space program has gone since the Apollo missions back in the early 1970s. The test will determine whether Orion is capable of surviving the re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, which can hit temperatures of...

A test version of NASA's Orion spacecraft soon will make a cross-country journey, giving residents in three states the chance to see a full scale test version of the vehicle that will take humans into deep space. The crew module will make stops during a trip from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The planned stops include Jan. 23-25 at Science Museum Oklahoma in Oklahoma City; Jan. 27-29 at Victory Park and the American Airlines Center in...

NASA Completes Orion Drop Testing
2012-01-10 05:12:09

[ Watch the Video ] After six months of testing, an 18,000 pound (8,165 kg) Orion mockup took its final splash into NASA Langley Research Center's Hydro Impact Basin on Jan. 6. Orion, the next deep space exploration vehicle, will carry astronauts into space, provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during space travel, and ensure safe re-entry and landing. The testing, which began in July 2011, simulated different water landing scenarios and took into account different...

Media representatives are invited to watch as the Orion crew capsule makes its final water landing test on Thursday, Jan. 5, at NASA's Langley Research Center's Hydro Impact Basin in Hampton, Va. Testing began last summer to certify the Orion spacecraft for water landings. Orion will carry astronauts into space, providing emergency abort capability, sustaining the crew during space travel and ensuring safe re-entry and landing. Since July 2011, engineers have conducted eight tests at...

Orion is a spacecraft design that is being developed by the United States space agency NASA. When completed, each Orion spacecraft will carry a crew of up to six astronauts. Along with Orion, the Ares I launch vehicle is also being developed. Orion and Ares I are both part of NASA's Project Constellation. The project should be complete in 2010, when NASA wants to start planning on sending human explorers back to the Moon, and eventually Mars and other celestial bodies in the Solar System....

Project Constellation is a spaceflight program run by NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration). The program goals are to continue significant operations away from Earth's environment, to develop technologies needed for expanding exploration of space, and to continue conducting fundamental science. Project Constellation was developed by the Exploration Systems Architecture Study, which established how NASA would pursue the goals from the Vision for Space Exploration and the...
