The flow of hot gas toward a black hole has been clearly imaged for the first time in X-rays.
The European Space Agency says data from its XMM-Newton space observatory has allowed astronomers to closely study a supermassive black hole. The black hole is located at the core of a distant active galaxy known as 1H0707-495.
Scientists using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory have discovered evidence of energetic plumes â€“ particles that extend 300,000 light years into a massive cluster of galaxies. The plumes are due to explosive venting from the vicinity of a supermassive black hole.
