Usually a banner month for seal hunting, this April has seen a shortage in seals due to lack of sea ice during a record-warm Canadian winter, and, according to officials and sealers, a boycott by the European Union has ruined the seal hunt off Canada's Atlantic coast. The Fisheries Minister of Canada, Gail Shea, increased the allowable catch of harp seals this season to 330,000, up by 50,000 from previous seasons, defying a ban on seal products by the European Union. However, most of...

GUELPH, Canada, March 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Canada's Minister of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has increased the total allowable catch (TAC) for harp seals in a year when the population is already challenged by a lethal habitat shortage. IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare - www.ifaw.org) says the increase is ridiculous and nonsensical, noting that such a high TAC is irrelevant given that few seal pups are expected to survive this year's disastrous ice conditions. "The...

BRUSSELS, Belgium, July 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Council of the European Union today adopted the regulation to ban the trade of all seal products within the EU. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW - www.ifaw.org) applauds the adoption as the last step of approval before the implementation of this momentous legislation. The ban is a significant victory in IFAW's 40-year campaign to end Canada's commercial seal hunt. "There is a wonderful sense of accomplishment today...

New legislation from the European Parliament will ban the sale of seal products in the 27-nation EU, BBC News reported. Animal welfare groups, which have long argued that the clubbing of seal pups by hunters is barbaric, had been lobbying for the change for years. Some 300,000 seals are killed off Canada's east coast annually in the biggest seal hunt in the world. Anti-hunt campaigners are outraged that some seals are skinned while still conscious. And most hunters typically shoot the seals...

BRUSSELS, May 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The European Parliament today voted 550 to 49 in favor of a ban on the trade of all seal products within the EU. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW - www.ifaw.org) applauded the decision as a significant victory in IFAW's 40 year campaign to end Canada's commercial seal hunt. The ban will forbid the sale of seal products for profit within the EU with an exception for Inuit and other indigenous peoples. "The Parliament has hammered the...

The Canadian government came under harsh criticism from environmental groups on Saturday for increasing its annual seal-hunting quota. The groups say Canada's move makes little sense given the expected European ban on all seal products. On Friday, the Canadian government authorized an increase in seal killing on the Atlantic seaboard to 280,000, one-third the total number of seals killed annually worldwide.  The new quota is 5,000 higher than last year's quota, and 10,000 above the quota...
