supernova SN 2014J
2014-08-14 10:48:55

NASA/Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics New data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory offer a glimpse into the environment of a star before it exploded earlier this year, and insight into what triggered one of the closest supernovas witnessed in decades. The data gathered on the Jan. 21 explosion, a Type Ia supernova, allowed scientists to rule out one possible cause. These supernovas may be triggered when a white dwarf takes on too much mass from its companion star,...

Supernova Gold Standard For Normal

Lee Rannals for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online A group of astronomers has released a dataset based on 32 nights of repeated observations of supernova 2011fe, creating a "gold-standard" atlas for Type 1a supernovae. Astronomers were able to catch supernova 2011fe just 12 hours after it exploded in the Pinwheel Galaxy in the Big Dipper. The supernova is easy to spot with binoculars, and has been nicknamed the Backyard Supernova. Researchers from the international Nearby Supernova...

Image 1 - Supernova Reaching Its Peak Brightness Thursday And Friday

Astronomers will be losing sleep as they wait on a newly discovered supernova to reach its peak in brightness on Thursday and Friday. The exploding star is about 21 million light years away and was first spotted by telescopes August 23. It is the closest of its kind to be seen in four decades and is located in the "Pinwheel Galaxy" above the Big Dipper. Amateur star-gazers could even equip themselves with 20x80 binoculars to help see the exploding star. Astronomers say that the...
