Governors of states bordering the Great Lakes have asked the U.S. government to speed up activation of a barrier designed to keep Asian carp out of the lakes. Federal officials worry that the electrified barrier might be dangerous for the crews of barges on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

A giant Atlantic bluefin tuna weighing more than half a ton had the honor of being fitted with the 1000th electronic tracking tag placed on this threatened species when it was caught and released on Monday (October 20) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off Port Hood, Nova Scotia.
