Large Magellanic Cloud Completes One Rotation Every 250M Years
2014-02-18 13:13:39

Scientists using the NASA Hubble Space Telescope found that the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) completes a rotation every 250 million years. The team used Hubble to measure the average motion of hundreds of individual stars in the nearby galaxy, which is located about 170,000 light-years away from Earth.

Stellar Motions In Outer Halo Reveal Evidence Of Milky Way Evolution

Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to peer deep into the vast stellar halo that envelopes our galaxy have uncovered tantalizing evidence for the possible existence of a shell of stars that are a relic of cannibalism by our Milky Way.

What Fuels Black Hole Growth?

Black holes are very efficient eating machines… They can double their mass in less than a billion years. That may seem long by human standards, but over the history of the Galaxy it's pretty fast.

The massive black hole at the center of our Milky Way Galaxy is destined to be invaded by a gas cloud, creating a violent encounter, according to astronomers.

How Did Single Stars Lose Their Companions

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has provided astronomers with the best observational evidence to date that globular clusters sort out stars according to their mass, governed by a gravitational billiard ball game between stars.

An international team of astronomers today announced the first results from the Radial Velocity Experiment, an ambitious all-sky spectroscopic survey aimed at measuring the speed, temperature, surface gravity and composition of up to a million stars passing near the sun.

Ancient black hole speeds through Sun's galactic neighborhood, devouring a nearby companion starHubble Space Telescope -- Data from the Space Telescope Science Institute's Digitized Sky Survey has played an important supporting role in helping radio and X-ray astronomers discover an ancient black hole speeding through the Sun's galactic neighborhood.

Word of the Day
postliminy
  • In Roman antiquity, the return of a person who had been banished, or taken prisoner by an enemy, to his old condition and former privileges.
  • In international law, that right by virtue of which persons and things taken by an enemy in war are restored to their former status when coming again under the power of the nation to which they belonged.
The word 'postliminy' comes from a Latin word meaning 'threshold'.
