Despite their popularity in the science fiction genre, there is much to be learned about black holes, the mysterious regions in space once thought to be absent of light. In a paper published in the August 20 issue of Physical Review Letters, the flagship journal of the American Physical Society, Dartmouth researchers propose a new way of creating a reproduction black hole in the laboratory on a much-tinier scale than their celestial counterparts. The new method to create a tiny quantum sized...

TUCSON, Ariz., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The basis of Christianity is the teachings of Jesus Christ. This is an undisputed fact. While they have been passed through time in many forms and incarnations, the settings and text have remained unchanged. "The Man and a Boy" (published by iUniverse) by Dr. James McBride employs techniques of academic literary discourse to update the ideals and teachings of Jesus to a modern setting. "The Man and a Boy" is a portrayal of Jesus as a teacher, friend...

Cambridge University said Tuesday that physicist Stephen Hawking's family expects him to recover fully from a chest infection that has left him hospitalized. Hawking was taken to a local hospital in Cambridge on Monday.  He is 67 years old and suffers from an illness that has him wheel-chair bound and almost completely paralyzed.  Hawking communicates through an electronic voice synthesizer activated by his fingers. He is now "being kept in observation" at the hospital after being...

Renowned cosmologist Stephen Hawking will retire from his prominent Cambridge University position at the end of the academic year in September, but plans to continue his study of space and time, the university said Friday. Hawking is Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a position once held by the distinguished 18th century physicist Isaac Newton. Cambridge University policy requires officeholders to retire at the end of the academic year in which they turn 67 years old, a milestone Hawking...

Here's what didn't happen on Sept. 10th: The world did not end. Switching on the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator near Geneva, Switzerland, did not trigger the creation of a microscopic black hole. And that black hole did not start rapidly sucking in surrounding matter faster and faster until it devoured the Earth, as sensationalist news reports had suggested it might. Of course, because you're alive and reading this article today, you already knew that. Currently...

Stephen Hawking, best selling author of "A Brief History of Time" and the children's book "George's Secret Key to the Universe" written along with his daughter Lucy, will be sending his digitized DNA into space as part of NCsoft's(R) Operation Immortality(TM). Lucy Hawking is also participating in the project. Together, the father and daughter are hoping the project will raise awareness of the Archon X PRIZE for Genomics, a competition that will award $10 million to the first person or team...

Physicists at Penn State have provided a mechanism by which information can be recovered from black holes, those regions of space where gravity is so strong that, according to Einstein's theory of general relativity, not even light can escape. The team's findings pave the way toward ending a decades-long debate sparked by renowned physicist Steven Hawking. The team's work will be published in the 20 May 2008 issue of the journal Physical Review Letters. In the 1970s, Hawking showed that black...

Famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking has been thinking a lot about the cosmic question, "Are we alone?" The answer is probably not, he says. If there is life elsewhere in the universe, Hawking asks why haven't we stumbled onto some alien broadcasts in space, maybe something like "alien quiz shows?" Hawking's comments were part of a lecture at George Washington University on Monday in honor of NASA's 50th anniversary. He theorized that there are possible answers to whether there is...

Stephen Hawking should be pleased. The first signs of an effect the British physicist predicted more than 30 years ago "“ known as Hawking radiation "“ have finally materialized from the simulated edge of a black hole.Quantum mechanics tells us that entangled pairs made up of a particle and its antiparticle can spontaneously pop out of otherwise empty space, exist for a fleeting moment, and then annihilate each other and disappear. In the 1970s, Hawking predicted that if such a...

By MIKE SCHNEIDER CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Free of his wheelchair and tethered only to heart rate and blood pressure monitors, astrophysicist Stephen Hawking on Thursday fulfilled a dream of floating weightless on a zero-gravity jet, a step he hopes leads to further space adventures. The modified jet carrying Hawking, a handful of his physicians and nurses, and dozens of others first flew up to 24,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean off Florida. Nurses lifted Hawking and carried him to the front...
