The mystery of how the world's largest living reptile - the estuarine crocodile - has come to occupy so many South Pacific islands separated by huge stretches of ocean despite being a poor swimmer has at last been solved by a group of Australian ecologists. Publishing their new study in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Animal Ecology, they say that like a surfer catching a wave, the crocodiles ride ocean currents to cross large areas of open sea. The estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus...

Bob Irwin, father of the late television personality and conservationist Steve Irwin, is calling on China to disallow importing kangaroo meat for consumption. On Tuesday, Japan said it plans to ask Australia, New Zealand, and Chile to ban the Steve Irwin, an anti-whaling protest ship, from using their ports to refuel.  The Sea Shepherd group has used the Steve Irwin to chase Japanese whalers through Antarctic waters for nearly 2,000 miles.  Japanese officials consider the group, and the actions of the Steve Irwin to border on piracy.  Officials reacted on Tuesday by saying they will ask nearby nations to keep the ship from taking...

Word of the Day
cock-a-hoop
  • Exultant; jubilant; triumphant; on the high horse.
  • Tipsy; slightly intoxicated.
This word may come from the phrase 'to set cock on hoop,' or 'to drink festively.' Its origin otherwise is unclear. A theory, according to the Word Detective, is that it's a 'transliteration of the French phrase 'coq a huppe,' meaning a rooster displaying its crest ('huppe') in a pose of proud defiance.' Therefore, 'cock-a-hoop' would 'liken a drunken man to a boastful and aggressive rooster.'
