What do a herd of gazelles and a fluffy mass of clouds have in common? A mathematical formula that describes the population dynamics of such prey animals as gazelles and their predators has been used to model the relationship between cloud systems, rain and tiny floating particles called aerosols. This model may help climate scientists understand, among other things, how human-produced aerosols affect rainfall patterns. The research recently appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy...

According to new research, whitening clouds by spraying them with seawater could do more harm than good for climate change. Whiter clouds reflect more solar energy back into space, which inevitably cools the Earth. However a study presented at the European Geosciences Union meeting found that using water droplets of the wrong size would lead to warming, not cooling. One scientist said it should be possible to make sure droplets were the correct size. John Latham of the University...

Researchers demonstrate how honeycomb clouds exhibit self-organization Like shifting sand dunes, some clouds disappear in one place and reappear in another. New work this week in Nature  shows why: Rain causes air to move vertically, which breaks down and builds up cloud walls. The air movement forms patterns in low clouds that remain cohesive structures even while appearing to shift about the sky, due to a principle called self-organization. These clouds, called open-cell clouds that...

NASA -- A NASA study found some clouds that form on tiny haze particles are not cooling the Earth as much as previously thought. These findings have implications for the ability to predict changes in climate.Andrew Ackerman, a scientist at NASA Ames Research Center, located in California's Silicon Valley, and his colleagues found, when the air over clouds is dry, polluted clouds hold less water and reflect less solar energy. Ackerman is the study's principal author.Contrary to expectations,...

Cumulus Clouds (Low Cloud)

If you look in the photo above you can see the line of Cumulus clouds that appear in the background. These clouds were created by daytime heating and also an unstable atmosphere. The moisture for these clouds was rising from the Pacific Ocean. The darker cloud is the stronger of the cumulus clouds meaning that the majority of the moisture is being absorbed by that cloud. The clouds around this one are also starting to get more moisture from the ocean to build. Above the cumulus clouds you...

There are several types of cumulus clouds. Some are only 3,000ft above the ground while others are found above 20,000ft. They range in size from small to very large and have a wide aspect on impacting the weather. Cumulus- These clouds are generally found 3,000ft above the ground and white in color. They are formed by warm air rising from the surface and saturating in the upper levels. These types of clouds can look like shapes and animals . They are sometimes referred to as the...
