Study strengthens link between amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and problems in protein production machinery of cells and identifies possible treatment strategy Researchers have tied mutations in a gene that causes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neurodegenerative disorders to the toxic buildup of certain proteins and related molecules in cells, including neurons. The research, published recently in the scientific journal Cell, offers a new approach for developing...

Researchers have shown that an ALS-related protein is involved in clearing RNA-containing material that builds up in cells, including neurons. The finding suggests that loss of that clearance ability may contribute to the disease. Washington, DC (PRWEB) June 25, 2013 In work funded by The ALS Association through its support of Regina-Maria Kolaitis, Ph.D., a Milton Safenowitz Post-Doctoral Fellow, researchers have shown that an ALS-related protein is involved in clearing RNA-containing...

Several genes have been linked to ALS, with one of the most recent called FUS. Two new studies in PLoS Biology, one from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and the other from colleagues at Brandeis University, both examined FUS biology in yeast and found that defects in RNA biology may be central to how FUS contributes to ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease. These findings point to new targets for developing drugs. Proteins aggregate to form insoluble clumps in the brain and spinal...

A Jackson Laboratory research team, working in collaboration with researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, show that RNA granules--key players in messenger RNA (mRNA) processing--can affect eye development, leading to juvenile cataracts in humans and mice. The research, published in the March 25 issue of Science, also demonstrates the first connection between RNA granules and glaucoma, as the humans and mice in the study developed glaucoma. In the...
