Suomi NPP Begins Direct Broadcast
2012-07-07 09:27:17

Real-time data that will be used in everything from weather forecasts to disaster response is now being beamed down to Earth from a cone-shaped appendage aboard the nation's newest Earth-observing satellite. The High Rate Data (HRD) link is an antenna aboard the Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite that provides 'direct broadcast' data to users in real-time. Researchers world-wide are then able to use customized algorithms, or mathematical formulas, turning raw data...

NASA has completed commissioning of the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite (NPP), which is now making global environmental observations. The satellite will provide scientists with critical insight into the dynamics of the entire Earth system, including climate, clouds, oceans, and vegetation. It will also gather enhanced data for improving our nation's weather forecasting system. The mission, launched in October 2011, is the result of a partnership between NASA, the...

Ozone Suite On Suomi NPP Continues More Than 30 Years Of Ozone Data
2012-02-24 04:33:51

A new satellite instrument suite is now sending back detailed information about the health of the Earth's ozone layer, the shield that protects the world´s population from harmful levels of the sun's ultraviolet radiation. The Ozone Mapper and Profiler Suite, or OMPS, is one of five new instruments flying aboard NASA's Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite (NPP), which was launched on Oct. 28, 2011. Suomi NPP is the result of a partnership between NASA, the National...

Image 1 - Behind the Scenes - VIIRS Eastern Hemisphere Image
2012-02-07 04:34:43

The Suomi NPP satellite is in a polar orbit around Earth at an altitude of 512 miles (about 824 kilometers), but the perspective of the new Eastern hemisphere 'Blue Marble' is from 7,918 miles (about 12,743 kilometers). NASA scientist Norman Kuring managed to 'step back' from Earth to get the big picture by combining data from six different orbits of the Suomi NPP satellite. Or putting it a different way, the satellite flew above this area of Earth six times over an eight hour time period....

NASA Renames Earth-Observing Mission In Honor Of Satellite Pioneer
2012-01-26 05:33:09

NASA has renamed its newest Earth-observing satellite in honor of the late Verner E. Suomi, a meteorologist at the University of Wisconsin who is recognized widely as "the father of satellite meteorology." The announcement was made Jan. 24 at the annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society in New Orleans. NASA launched the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System Preparatory Project, or NPP, on Oct. 28, 2011, from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California....
