Understanding The Mechanisms Of Supraglacial Lake Drainage
2013-07-17 11:03:06

Brett Smith for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online Lakes often form on top of a glacier and drain onto the bedrock below, lubricating a glacier's movements as a result. A new study from an international group of researchers has found that the way these lakes drain can affect the velocity, extent and direction of a glacier's progress. Previous research has focused on the lubrication action of supraglacial lakes after they drain, but not on the draining mechanism itself. According to the...

Scientists reported on Friday that Greenland's icesheet shed a record amount of melted snow and ice in 2010. The study found that the 2010 runoff was twice the average annual loss in Greenland over the previous three decades, surpassing a record set in 2007. According to the paper, ice melt has now topped this benchmark every year since 1996. Greenland's icesheet could drive up ocean levels by about 23 feet if it melted, drowning coastal cities around the world. No credible projections...

Researchers Make First Observations of Surface Meltwater Cutting through the Ice Sheet to Lubricate the BottomResearchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and the University of Washington (UW) have for the first time documented the sudden and complete drainage of a lake of meltwater from the top of the Greenland ice sheet to its base. From those observations, scientists have uncovered a plumbing system for the ice sheet, where meltwater can penetrate thick, cold ice and...
