Feathered Dinosaurs Developed Larger Brains Before Actually Taking Flight

[ Watch the Video: CT Scan of Albatross Brain ] redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports - Your Universe Online Feathered dinosaurs actually developed the larger brains needed for flight before actually taking to the skies, according to a new study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. In the study, lead author Amy Balanoff, a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History and a postdoctoral researcher at Stony Brook University, and her colleagues, used CT scans to...

Aurornis Xui Discovery Puts Archaeopteryx Back In Bird Family

Lee Rannals for redOrbit.com — Your Universe Online A new discovery made by paleontologists digging in China has put Archaeopteryx back on the map as one of the earliest birds. Archaeopteryx was first discovered in 1861 and, at the time, was professed to be the world's earliest bird. However, in 2011 researchers carried out a phylogenetic analysis and determined that the Archaeopteryx was actually just another feathered dinosaur. If this team was right, it would mean flight...

Image 1 - Killer Claws Help Provide New Theory On Evolution Of Flight
2011-12-16 03:57:20

New research from Montana State University's Museum of the Rockies has revealed how dinosaurs like Velociraptor and Deinonychus used their famous killer claws, leading to a new hypothesis on the evolution of flight in birds. In a paper published Dec. 14 in PLoS ONE, MSU researchers Denver W. Fowler, Elizabeth A. Freedman, John B. Scannella and Robert E. Kambic (now at Brown University in Rhode Island), describe how comparing modern birds of prey helped develop a new behavior model for...

Deciphering microscopic clues hidden within fossils, scientists have uncovered the vibrant colors that adorned a feathered dinosaur extinct for 150 million years, a Yale University-led research team reports online Feb. 4 in the journal Science. Unlike recently published work from China that inferred the existence of two types of melanin pigments in various species of feathered dinosaurs, the Science study analyzed color-imparting structures called melanosomes from an entire fossil of a single...

Fossil experts say the stunning remains of a "four-winged" dinosaur have confirmed that birds owe their ancestry to two-footed dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago, AFP reported. The well-preserved fossil of a bird-like dinosaur called Anchiornis huxleyi may be the deciding factor, according to Xing Xu of the Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing. Based on incomplete fossils, A. huxleyi was thought to have been a near contemporary of Archaeopteryx, the first recognized bird, which flew...

Velociraptor, meaning “swift seizer” is a genus of dromaeosaurid theropod dinosaur that lived about 75 to 71 million years ago during the later part of the Cretaceous Period. There are two species that are presently recognized. The type species is V. mongoliensis; fossils of this particular species have been uncovered in Mongolia. A second species, V. osmolskae, it was named in 2008 for some skull material from Inner Mongolia, China. They are smaller than other dromaeosaurids such as...

Zanabazar is a genus of troodontid dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous Period of Mongolia. Fossils from this creature have been found in the Nemegt Formation in Mongolia. Zanabazar was originally classified as a new species of the genus Saurornithoides by Rinchen Barsbold in 1974. A 2009 review of the genus found that there was little proof to back up this idea. The species was re-classified to its current genus Zanabazar -- named in honor of Zanabazar, the first spiritual head of Tibetan...
