asteroid visitor
2014-09-04 09:04:03

NASA A small asteroid, designated 2014 RC, will safely pass very close to Earth on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014.  At the time of closest approach, based on current calculations to be about 2:18 p.m. EDT (11:18 a.m. PDT / 18:18 UTC), the asteroid will be roughly over New Zealand.  From its reflected brightness, astronomers estimate that the asteroid is about 60 feet (20 meters) in size. Asteroid 2014 RC was initially discovered on the night of August 31 by the Catalina Sky Survey near Tucson,...

Asteroid 2013 ET Captured By Deep Space Network
2013-03-20 08:50:01

April Flowers for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online On March 10, 2013, NASA scientists obtained a sequence of radar images of asteroid 2013 ET using the 230-foot Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, California. At the time the images were captured, the asteroid was about 693,000 miles from Earth, or approximately 2.9 lunar distances. The asteroid is irregularly shaped and at least 130 feet wide according to the radar imagery. The scientific team, led by Marina Brozovic and Lance...

Potentially Hazardous Asteroid Passing Close To Earth Tonight
2012-12-11 15:23:13

Lee Rannals for redOrbit.com — Your Universe Online Potentially Hazardous Asteroid, 4179 Toutatis, will be making a close approach of Earth this week, just in time to give "world ending" theorists something to talk about. The asteroid has an estimated diameter of over 3 miles, which is about half the size of the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. Some believe that the Mayan calendar predicts the world will be ending this year on December 21 due to an asteroid striking...

Radar Images Of Asteroid 2007 PA8
2012-11-27 20:02:52

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory A collage shows nine radar images of near-Earth asteroid 2007 PA8 that were obtained between Oct. 31 and Nov. 13, 2012, with data collected by NASA's 230-foot-wide (70-meter) Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, Calif. On Nov. 5 at 8:42 a.m. PST (11:42 a.m. EST/16:42 UTC), the object came about 4 million miles (6.5 million kilometers) from Earth, or 17 times the distance between Earth and the moon. The images of 2007 PA8 reveal possible craters,...

Life On Earth Survives Another Day As Asteroid Misses By Miles
2011-11-09 06:06:28

[ Watch the Video ] The Earth faced a close-call on Tuesday, or as close of a call as it will face from the same asteroid for the next 83 years. The asteroid 2005 YU55 made its closest fly-by to Earth on Tuesday evening at 29,000 miles-per-hour about 202,000 miles away. The asteroid is the largest asteroid making a cameo appearance so close to Earth in over 30 years. Several radar telescopes throughout North America set up live feeds for people to watch as the asteroid whizzed by...

NASA Captures Image Of Large Asteroid Passing Earth
2011-11-08 04:30:48

NASA's Deep Space Network antenna in Goldstone, Calif. has captured new radar images of Asteroid 2005 YU55 passing close to Earth. The asteroid safely will fly past our planet slightly closer than the moon's orbit on Nov. 8. The last time a space rock this large came as close to Earth was in 1976, although astronomers did not know about the flyby at the time. The next known approach of an asteroid this size will be in 2028. The image was taken on Nov. 7 at 11:45 a.m. PST, when the...

NASA In Final Preps For Nov. 8 Asteroid Flyby
2011-10-27 04:30:32

NASA scientists will be tracking asteroid 2005 YU55 with antennas of the agency's Deep Space Network at Goldstone, Calif., as the space rock safely flies past Earth slightly closer than the moon's orbit on Nov. 8. Scientists are treating the flyby of the 1,300-foot-wide (400-meter) asteroid as a science target of opportunity - allowing instruments on "spacecraft Earth" to scan it during the close pass. Tracking of the aircraft carrier-sized asteroid will begin at 9:30 a.m. local time (PDT)...

A small asteroid will fly past Earth early Tuesday within the Earth-moon system. The asteroid, 2010 TD54, will have its closest approach to Earth's surface at an altitude of about 45,000 kilometers (27,960 miles) at 6:50 EDT a.m. (3:50 a.m. PDT). At that time, the asteroid will be over southeastern Asia in the vicinity of Singapore. During its flyby, Asteroid 2010 TD54 has zero probability of impacting Earth. A telescope of the NASA-sponsored Catalina Sky Survey north of Tucson, Arizona...

Near-Earth asteroid 2005 YU55 was "imaged" by the Arecibo Radar Telescope in Puerto Rico on April 19. Data collected during Arecibo's observation of 2005 YU55 allowed the Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to refine the space rock's orbit, allowing scientists to rule out any possibility of an Earth impact for the next 100 years. The space rock was about 2.3 million kilometers (1.5 million miles) from Earth at the time this image of the radar echo was...
